Nifty flat on special trading session; DLF, BHEL up

MUMBAI: The National Stock Exchange's Nifty was flat on the special trading session on account of low trading volumes. The cues from the US markets were positive after better-than-expected jobs data for December while Asian markets are shut for the day.

The NSE is conducting a live trading session as it is upgrading its Futures & Options trading system hardware and software system. Trading will take place in capital market segment, F&O segment and Securities Lending & Borrowing Scheme between 11.15 am to 12.45 pm. Trades will be settled on Tuesday as a separate settlement.

The Nifty was at 4753.60, down 0.50 points or 0.01 per cent. It touched a high of 4759 and low of 4745.80 in trade so far.

The Bombay Stock Exchange's Sensex was at 15872.23, up 4.50 points or 0.03 per cent. The 30-share index touched intraday high 15900 and low of 15847.61 intraday.

"There is a developing pattern of head and shoulder in hourly chart of index which could complete if Sensex crosses 16050 and Nifty 4800. Indices are finding difficult to cross the neckline of the head & shoulder but, if the pattern gets complete than we can expect a smart rally which can take index to 4975 levels within few days.

We saw a low of 4686 short term charts are indicating that as long as Nifty stays above 4680 the possibility of touching higher level remains open in this leg of uptrend and the sustaining below 4680 will only change bias to negative," said Rakesh Gandhi, Sr Technical Analyst of LKP Securities.

BSE Midcap Index was up 0.33 per cent and BSE Smallcap Index moved 0.44 per cent higher.

Amongst the sectoral indices, BSE Capital Goods Index was up 0.55 per cent, BSE Realty Index moved 0.52 per cent higher and BSE Power Index gained 0.49 per cent. BSE FMCG Index was down 0.32 per cent and BSE Bankex declined 0.14 per cent.

DLF (1.35%), BHEL (0.90%), Reliance Power (0.68%), Punjab National Bank (0.58%) and Reliance Communications (0.58%) were the major Nifty gainers.

Jaiprakash Associates (-1.88%), Cipla (-0.77%), ICICI Bank (-0.69%), Hindalco Industries (-0.67%) and BPCL (-0.66%) were amongst the losers pack.

Market breadth was positive on the NSE with 763 gainers against 513 losers.
